SURREY ASBAH NEWS OCTOBER 2010
Welcome to the autumn edition of our Newsletter.
We hope that you all had an enjoyable summer. It was great to see many of you at our annual summer picnic and the recent canal boat trip.
Forthcoming Events
Surrey ASBAH’s Annual General Meeting and Meal
The AGM will be held on Sunday 20th March 2011. We plan to meet at 12.30pm for lunch at the Blue Ball public house and to move on to Lower Kingswood for our meeting.
More details to come closer to the date but please make a note in your diary now.
PANTO!
Yes, we are approaching that time of the year, and would like to invite you to a Dick Whittington pantomime performance at the Epsom Playhouse. This has been a successful venue in previous years and is fully accessible, with capacity for up to 8 wheelchairs.
The date is Saturday 8th January 2011. The performance starts at 2.30pm but we will meet for a drink first.
There is easy access from Ashley Centre Car Park. The entrance to the theatre is at street level. There are disabled toilet facilities adjacent to the foyer in the Theatre.
A full price ticket costs £16.50, but Surrey ASBAH will subsidise this event.
The children had a wonderful time last year – and the adults were thoroughly entertained too!

Ironman & Ironwoman Fundraising Event
You may remember reading about Jim Stoner’s brave (mad?) colleagues from the Infrastructure investment team at 3i, and their incredibly demanding challenge to complete an Iron Man event in Copenhagen. Well, on Sunday 15 August, after some truly horrible weather conditions, Lisa, Kenny and Stuart achieved a truly outstanding race time of 12 hrs and 3 mins - AMAZING! Lisa’s 3.8km swim (how far?!) took her only 1hr 6mins, Stuart’s bike powered along 180km of Danish tarmac in only 6 hrs and 58 minutes (though he hasn’t sat down since) and Kenny ran his 26.2 mile marathon in a blistering 3hrs 55 minutes. Congratulations to all three of them and a huge thank you for the incredible £12,000 they have raised for ASBAH and Surrey ASBAH.
Lower Kingswood Fete
Despite the gale force winds in the morning and freezing hail just as the fete opened, the fete was a success and our share of the profits was a super £260! Many thanks to Angela, Simon, James and Liz who braved the elements and donated their time to help out.
If you have any great fundraising ideas, or are interested in fundraising for Surrey ASBAH, please contact Linda.

News
ASBAH National Membership Scheme:
ASBAH National now offers a FREE Membership to ASBAH for all those with whom they currently work. This will include children and young people, disabled adults and families/carers.
This membership is not designed to replace or affect the membership of local associations such as Surrey. Members will be part of a national community, with support at local level.
All those people currently registered with ASBAH National will automatically be included in the new membership scheme and should have been contacted with the first membership mailing. Any person who does not wish to be included will have the opportunity to opt out.
Membership mailings will be produced four times a year and will be designed to update people on new developments and events, provide useful information and contacts and, above all, encourage more participation in ASBAH by the people for whom it exists.
Through this scheme, and more direct communication with people, ASBAH National hopes to be in a position to formulate a more accurate national picture of the population of people with Spina Bifida and/or Hydrocephalus, and determine with more certainty what their priority needs and aspirations are, and the issues which should form the basis of national campaigns and policy.
Link Magazine - Update
LINK will be discontinued in its present form and replaced by a free publication to be included in the National membership mailing. If you receive LINK but are not currently registered with ASBAH national, please contact them in order to be included in the new membership scheme and thus receive the publication, which replaces LINK.
As a result of these changes we will be reducing the membership subscription for Surrey ASBAH to £5 per year from January. Renewal forms for 2011 will be sent with our next newsletter.
The ASBAH National website (http://www.asbah.org) is a valuable source of information. It provides a full list of publications which can be ordered on-line or by phone. Leaflets are in pdf format and can be printed from the website.
Right to Control (personalisation)
Surrey County Council has been selected as one of the Trailblazing Authorities for "Right to Control", previously known as personalisation. Surrey CC is developing its communication and engagement plan for the project and is keen to involve and engage disabled people, carers, and third sector organisation in the development and implementation of the plans. Jo Francis from ASBAH London and South office has expressed an interest in being involved in discussions. Jo will attend the meetings but is keen for disabled people's views to be taken forward.
Surrey CC welcomes ASBAH's views and the views of people with spina bifida and hydrocephalus as well as carers. You are invited to put forward your views either to Jo Francis (contact details below) or direct to Abi Ajoni (020 8541 7636 or 01483 458111) or email Abi.ajoni@surreycc.gov.uk
Congratulations!
On 10th August Trudy Eborn, who recently retired from serving on our Committee for many years, married Chris Sewley in Leatherhead. The damp weather did not detract from a lovely ceremony in the splendid surroundings of the Mansion. The bride looked lovely! Among the guests was Jackie Wingrave who many of you will remember as the Adviser before Angela Bailey. We wish Trudy and Chris the very best in their married life together.

Fitness – The Phoenix Centre
The Phoenix Centre has received a grant from the Aiming High disability fund, in partnership with the Sutton Disability Partnership and GLL, which has enabled them to purchase 13 pieces of equipment designed to cater for minority groups such as the visually impaired, wheel chair users and people with learning disabilities. As well as aiding young and older people to more accessible use of their fitness facilities, modifications have been made to the centre for ease of access as well as shower and changing facilities.
Diane Morgan recently attended an Open Day and reported that the building is very spacious and well equipped with several machines in the gym suitable for those in wheelchairs. There is also a club for 12-18 year olds with physical and learning difficulties on a Monday night 6.30-8.30pm. Activities on offer are sports, gym, art, table top games etc. The Phoenix Centre is in Mollison Drive, Wallington, SM6 9NZ.
